General Technology
How do I turn Webster computer screens on and off?
In each room there is a Smart Panel with large rubber buttons. "On" and "Off" will turn on the screens, which controls the projector behind the screens. The computers themselves should always stay on.
How can I simply plug in my laptop?
In the center of the floor in each room is a floorbox with an input for a laptop connection cable (VGA). Long cables are kept in each of the rooms, so just plug in as you would with any other tech classroom. Turn on the projector at the Smart Panel and switch the input to 'laptop.'
Is there a DVD player or VCR in the room?
There is a combination DVD/VCR player in each room. They are connected to in-room speakers and operate via remote control. Multi-region DVD players are available upon request.
How much of this technology is available outside of Wallenberg Hall?
All of the IT hardware and furniture in Wallenberg Hall are commercially available products. The iRoom software is an open source application developed by Stanford's Computer Science Deptartment. The software can be downloaded from the project home page.
How do I bring my presentations or other files on to the computers in Wallenberg Hall classrooms?
- Bring your files on a USB Drive - USB ports are accessible for all of the in-room computers in the Wallenberg Hall rooms.
- Post your files to a class, public, or private website. Many instructors utilize Stanford's Coursework system.
- Email files to yourself, then login and download your files.
- Use Stanford's AFS/Leland system and mount your home drive directly on a desktop.
Room 120: Microsoft Windows Classroom
Where are the tablet PCs? What do I need to know about them?
There are 20 HP/Compaq Tablet computers in a storage cart in room 120. All the PCs are wirelessly networked and can interact with the Websters. If you are using a tablet, move your cursor through the 'roof' or top portion of your screen, and it will appear on the Websters. You will then be able to control the computer at the front of the room. You can also drag a URL from your tablet's browser onto the Multibrowse box, and choose where to 'send' the file. Please be sure to plug the computers back in when you are finished.
Can I write on the room's windows?
Go right ahead! Use any dry-erase marker and write on the windows just as you would a whiteboard.
How can I create my own disk space on the Webster computers?
The computers in room 120 have multiple hard disks that are isolated from each other. If you have special software needs, the SCIL staff can create a customized disk for your class.
Room 127: Apple Macintosh Classroom
Where are the in-class laptops? What's special about them?
There is a rack of Apple iBooks in a storage cart in room 127. All are wirelessly networked and can interact with the Websters. If you are using an iBook, push your cursor through the 'roof' or top portion of your screen and it will appear on the Websters. You will be able to control the computer at the front of the room.
How can I share files and websites in room 127?
If you see a small window with 'Multibrowse' open, just drag a URL or file from your iBook's browser onto the Multibrowse box, and choose where to 'send' the file. To open Multibrowse, open the System Preferences (light switch icon in the Mac dock) and click on Event Sharing Preference Panel. From there you will find a check box to turn on Multibrowse.
Where can I find the pictures of the whiteboards I saved with the CopyCam?
Images that you have saved from the Copycam can be found on the CopyCam website.
